If a plant is allowed to deteriorate and the biological process fails, it could result in raw sewage passing through a watercourse, having a severe impact on the environment.

  • Prosecution from the Environment Agency

In order to ensure that sewage plants discharge the appropriate quality of effluent, the Environment Agency carry out regular testing. If a sewage treatment plant fails the consent given, the Environment Agency can issue a fine of up to £20,000 and initiate a criminal prosecution of the site owners - which is a public company pass to board level.

Sewage treatment systems are dangerous places, and on sites open to the public such as pubs, hotels, golf courses and caravan parks, the need to secure the area is paramount. In many cases, a neglected sewage treatment plant will have unsecured lids and chambers, if these are easy to open they may pose a risk of injury to the public - in particular children.

Our planned maintenance contract for sewage plants typically includes quarterly service visits where the equipment is checked for mechanical operation, discharge quality and is surveyed for any potential health and safety issues.

If parts require replacing or if the system is found to be underperforming, we will contact the client and agree on a plan to carry out the necessary repairs or alterations.

As part of our service contract package, customers are eligible to receive a dedicated account manager, priority call-out in the event of a breakdown and discounted call-out rates.


Where sewage is concerned, the need for a prompt response to any emergency is essential. Filta offer a 4-hour call-out anywhere within the UK to our contract customers.

  • First Time Fix

With the huge variety of sewage treatment systems installed within the UK, it is difficult to promise a first-time fix, every time. However, our engineers are highly skilled and carry a stock of common components enabling us to fix a problem at the first visit wherever possible.

  • Environment Agency Consent Failure

If you have received notification of a sewage treatment plant consent failure then please contact us immediately. Once we have received details of the site, we will carry out a priority survey and put forward our recommendations to bring the system up to standard. As part of our service, we will also copy all correspondence to the Environment Agency to ensure that they are satisfied with the actions taken.
